

The Purgatorie Campground is located about 30 miles southwest of the town of La Veta at an elevation of 9,700 feet. This campground has 23 campsites suitable for small RVs and tents. It is situated along the North ForkPurgatorieRiver. The campground is divided into three areas: a lower area near the river and two upper loops on a ridge above the river. There are four campsites near the river and 19 sites above the river. Shade and privacy are provided by aspen and spruce trees. Many of the upper campsites are in a grassy meadow with little shade. Campsites 11, 12, 13, 15, and 17 are approved for horse camping and are situated around a grassy meadow. You must bring only certified weed free hay, or certified weed free cubes, or pellets. Facilities include three vault toilets and a water hydrant. A trailhead for the North Fork Trail is located at the northwest end of the campground. Bears may frequent this campground so food precautions should be taken. Reservations are accepted. Open May through September.

Activities:
FISHING: Fishing is available in Monument and North lakes. The North Fork Purgatorie River is not fishable near the campground.
HORSEBACK RIDING : Horse camping is permitted in the campground.
From Walsenburg, travel about 11 miles to Highway 12. Turn south and go 4.7 miles to La Veta. Continue south on Highway 12 for about 26 miles to Forest Road 34.5 (just past NorthLake). Turn west and travel about 4.5 miles to the campground.
